English Side Saddles
Modern Type 2 - Flat Seat
| Maroon or burgundy colored modern English pleasure side
saddle. I like the dovetail saddle blanket. I made the leather lace for the
bridle and martingale from the same leather so everything matches perfectly.
The browband and noseband are lined with wedding white suede. |

| These Modern style side saddles are actually restored
antiques. Sidesaddle tree production stopped many years ago, so those who
want one have to find an old sidesaddle in good condition. Or find one in
bad condition - so long as the tree is in good shape - and have it restored.
That means these modern sidesaddles can come in any color leather available.
So
I decided to to make this one and take a break from the boring black and
browns. |

| Here is the same pattern in a two toned beige and tan.
Sidesaddles are often two toned because the leather and suede take to the
dye differently. The chrome tanned tan leather worked exceptionally well
with this pattern. The trick is to find leather that is thin enough with the
smallest grain pattern possible. This particular leather has almost no grain
pattern. I made the leather lace from the same skin so that the bridle and
Martingale would match the saddle perfectly. |

Modern Type 1 - Curved Seat
| This is a completely different pattern that I developed. I
call this Modern Type 1 as it was the type until the development of the flat
seat style. It is a good example of the evolution
of the sidesaddle. This is based off of a standard English tree, has a
curved seat and a cutback at the withers. I have also seen this type for
sale brand new. I have heard that the new sidesaddles are not of very good
quality. The curve in the seat makes the rider feel as if she is always
riding up hill. |
